Chalking it up in Year 9!

My Year 9s were excited! They knew we were going out to create their chalk designs from the previous lesson and some still needed to design theirs.
The time we were to go out was on the board and they worked SO HARD!

They were so proud to have their Mathematical 'artwork' on show in the Year 9 area and they put a LOT of effort into each of their drawings!

They had 7 minutes to complete their design in class on paper and have me sign it off and only 7 minutes to pack up, take bags down to their eating area and construct their drawing with all working out!

It was the topic of conversation between the 260 year 9 students when I was on play ground duty. Both my year 9 classes were showing others their drawings, playing handball and eating around it so no one else touched it! It even sparked discussion from the senior students when they walked through this area during their early finish!

Now to get COLOURED chalk! :)

In ACTION - Perimeter Worksheet & Crossword - Beginner Level (1)

Max is always so keen to try out anything I make that is either at or above his level! He was bursting to work on this sheet when he got home so I made sure I printed it on coloured paper to make it even more pretty! :)

Background: Max is 8 but will be 9 on 2nd June and he is in year 4.

Here he is working on the first page of the perimeter worksheet and keeps eyeing off the crossword because he wants to work on it now! :)

He keeps calculating the perimeter in his head and using the calculator to check his answers are correct. A great skill to have! So far Max said he has correctly calculated 8 out of the 9 questions in his head and he was only 1 value off the correct response! :) He circled and wrote the correct response in which was great to see his honesty!
For now it's lunch break time!

NEW! Perimeter Worksheet & Crossword - Beginner Level (1)

Phhhewww! I have a huge set of Perimeter Worksheets I'm in the middle of creating and rather than having them all together, I decided to split them into levels so you can purchase the exact ones you need OR when I've finished the levels, you can buy the bulk pack with a discount.

There are three sets with 21 questions in two different formats. One as a worksheet over two A4 pages that students can write on and the other as a handout on one A4 page where students write the working in their book.

These questions are all level 1 (or beginner) where all sides are labelled with measurements/ units of basic shapes and then develop into more complex questions and end with three word problems.

Additionally there is a fun crossword consolidation activity where students need to answer 9 perimeter questions (without units) and record their answers in the location on the crossword.

Answer sheet provided with full working for the worksheet and answers for the crossword.
It comes in .doc and .pdf format in case you want to edit some questions or units to suit your little ones!

Max was BEGGING me yesterday to complete this worksheet and crossword when I finished creating it, so look out for some pictures soon! :)

FREE Area Dominoes - Review in my Classroom

Year 9s are currently working on area, area of composite shapes, volume and capacity.

Since one of my year 9 classes require more support and engaging activities, I decided to use my FREEBIE Area of Square, Rectangle and Triangle Dominoes to review how to calculate the area of basic shapes that should have been covered in year 6 (covered, just forgotten)!

I differentiated this activity by making students show their calculations/ working out! :)
They LOVED working through this activity where they could work in a small group, share the 'working out' responsibility and collaborate to solve the problem!
It is always amazing to hear so much math-related discussion/ arguments happening in class!

Valentines Day in Maths - PHOTOS

After yesterdays blog post about the Valentines Day Math Activities I was going to do with my years 9s, I thought I would upload some photos of their work!

They really enjoyed being given the opportunity to not only work in pairs, but to be a part of the Year 9 Math wall and demonstrating ownership and pride in their understanding and work!

There were so many students helping others who had missed some lessons and needed some guidance, along with two students who managed to create two seperate hands rather than attached hands with a heart in the middle! lol

Valentines Day in Maths! Middle and High School

At my High School, apart from selling and having roses delivered to students (fake ones!), we don't seem to cover Valentines Day like its covered in Primary School.

SsssoooOooOoooOooooooo... I'm going to change that!

I saw this AMAZING idea somewhere where you fold a piece of A4 paper in half, place your hand so that your thumb and index finger touch the creased side and trace!

I made the mistake on my first one below to place my thumb straight which means your heart looks a little sad! You will have to get your little ones to bend their thumb a bit to make more of a heart shape!
I am using these with both my Year 9s tomorrow. They are going to work in pairs to complete a table, graph and determine the rule based on a rate I give them.

I created this example for students and I will put them up on their Year 9 Bulletin Board when they finish!
I know I will hear from them "I heart Maths",but that is what I'm hoping for!

I've been lucky enough to have some time on my hands to complete a second set of cards around perimeter, area and volume!

Unlike the last set I created, Perimeter, Area & Volume Math Center Cards #1 has three sets of 12 cards, this set has three sets of 16 cards with an increased difficulty level.
ALSO 20% off this item for a little while! :)

There are two themes to this set so you can use them all year round! A Valentines Day theme and a Regular theme. All answers are provided to the cards to make student checking much easier!

It seems I will have more laminating to do now! *I secretly LOVE laminating!!* :)

In Australia, we're all getting ready to go back to school in the next two weeks! TWO WEEKS!

WHERE did those HOLIDAYS go!?

They allllwayyysss FLLLLYYYYYYYYYY by, but I guess that means we've enjoyed the holidays to make them fly! :)

Our school voted on the student free days to be Wednesday, Thursday & Friday from 9am-4pm, so we're back in 11 days!

The kids don't come back until Tuesday 29th January because Monday is Australia Day's public holiday in lieu of because the public holiday is on the Saturday!

Between now and then we have a roof of a Gazebo to build, finish renovating downstairs, make a new FREEBIE and prepare for the new school year!
Any FREEBIE ideas!? :)
