Literacy in Maths - WHY it is so important?

I always quietly laugh when I hear students ask "why are we doing spelling in Maths" or "why does it matter if my spelling is wrong, it's Maths NOT English".

I know I'm not the only teacher who hears this from their students and NOW I can show them why it can be a problem when they're older. I saw this sign on Wednesday and just HAD to pull over and take a photo.

So I ask you: What is wrong in the below sign?

10 x Co-ordinate, Graphing, Ordered Pairs Cards - 50% Off SALE

As a year 8 and year 9 teacher I know how important it is for students to thoroughly understand co-ordinates/ ordered pairs. I often have students struggle and wanted an engaging, fun and rewarding way for students to practice their skills.

http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/10-x-Co-ordinate-Graphing-Ordered-Pairs-Cards-1282770

I have created co-ordinate activity cards where students begin with an A4 print out, fold along line 1, complete their design and decorate it, fold along line 2 and then complete a literacy activity by writing a letter or card and giving it to someone else.

So far I have created 10 different designs ranging in difficulty level. The easiest design is the Christmas tree and aeroplane and the most challenging design is the Gingerbread Man and the Skull & crossbones.

I am working on 5 more designs at the moment to add to this collection for the same price. This set is 50% off for a short time so jump on in and grab yourself a bargain for your students.

Relaxing on Holidays & Back to School

I am sure you all know what the end of the school year feels like... Relief... Exhaustion... Excitement... Cleaning... Unit review and re-writing... Preparing assessment for the first term of the following year... Class lists... Timetabling... It gets VERY busy but now it's over and 6 weeks of holidays are here!
The first week was spent with Kylie from DownUnderTeacher, her son Brendan, my husband, Max my step-son and Caitlin (we are her guardians) at Burleigh Heads on the Gold Coast.
Full of surfing lessons, bodyboarding, sun, relaxing, reading and most importantly, time together as a family.

Before we left we put up Christmas trees at both our home and at my Mums ('Grandma B'). Here is a photo of us together with Mums adopted Greyhound Tessa. We realized after this photo was taken that we were COMPLETELY blocking the Christmas tree! Oppppss....

Christmas Day was just beautiful and better than I imagined. I woke up still sick with tonsillitis so was feeling very average, but after relaxing at Mums with everyone I started to feel much better! :) Christmas Day we also had a good friend Maz join us for Christmas lunch. Caitlin and Max were also with us for Christmas day and present opening as was out blue-cattle dog Blackie!

Lastly my husband and I spent the other day 'fishing'... Well by fishing I mean throwing the line in, getting some sun, reading, relaxing and catching absolutely NOTHING! :)

Now its the time of year where I'm thinking about heading back to school! We have 25 days until students are back at school and 19 days until all teachers are due back for SFD. I'm in the middle of creating integer fast fact sheets along with more multiplication, addition and algebra fast fact sheets. It's great way to check for student understanding and for them to record their 'best time' and challenge themselves.

Graduation Ideas - Mortarboard Cupcakes & Quotes

Today was the last time I will see my year 12 Welfare class before their Graduation and Formal next Thursday. I wanted to give them something special along with some advice and a tasty treat. On Pinterest I saw a graduation cupcake and I just KNEW I had to make them. They all just loved the idea (even though in Australia we only wear a mortarboard when we graduate from University).
Here is the small quote I put on their card:

”Today is your day.
You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!
You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself in any direction you choose. You’re on your own.
And you know what you know. You are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”

Dr. Seuss - Oh, the Places You'll Go!

Year 12's are nearly gone!

Some flowers we have in our garden
We've been spending time outside in the garden lately and also at the Gold Coast during the weekend. We love spending time outside in the yard and pottering around.

At the moment we have a problem... our LETTUCE keeps being eaten! TOTALLY GONE. :( We're making a wire cage to go around it so whatever is snacking on it, stops!

The year 12's have their last three lessons of Mathematics ever and they have a HUGE assignment they are finishing off. Their task: travel to two different locations around the world and complete a series of questions from latitude and longitude, GMT time, flight quotes, accommodation, transport, travel insurance, culture and history along with a full itinerary for every day that they are away! PHEW..... They had five weeks of theory and their final five weeks to complete it! It's great to see them working so hard to ensure they have covered every detail. I can't wait to show you all where some students are travelling to!

Here are some photos of our day at the coast with Kylie from DownUnderTeacher and her son, along with my husband and my step-son. The following day we also went for a long cycle to the local park which is waterfront. Look at the sunken yacht in the picture! During our last lot of bad storms around ten months ago, it was washed up on the rocks and sunk. It's a great sight to look at though! :) We then did some quad biking after that at the local park.

I'm off to do some year 12 marking! three lessons left before they prepare to graduate and go to formal!

World Teachers Day

Last Friday was Teachers Day here in Australia and as a welfare class we had to come up with a thoughtful way of saying 'Thank You' to the teachers in a certain block.

It was beautiful to see how some of the students really came together to show their appreciation for the teachers who not only teach them, but go above and beyond in everything they do to ensure they succeed.

So we had mini chocolates delivered on all their desks, along with a cupcake each and a personal card saying thank you and a 'Happy World Teachers Day' card.
I would LOVE to see a lot more students giving back and saying thank you to others around them and not just on set days!

Something I am going to start next year with all my classes.

I STILL have to finish my blog post on my travels with Kylie from DownUnderTeacher  but it was such a fantastic cruise!

Was there anything special your kids did for Teachers Day? Do you celebrate it at your school?
*Have an AMAZING week*

Halloween Ten Frames & Halloween Chuppa Chup Spider

Since I saw these gorgeous spider chuppa chups on pinterest, I just KNEW I had to make them for my classes.
Now..... I know I teach high school Maths... I know I live in Australia and we don't really celebrate Halloween.... bbbuuutttttt last year I wore a witches hat with makeup and my classes just LOVE it! This year I can't wait to look around at what to wear but I don't think I can go past the basic witch costume!

Now after seeing these, I realized that I have very few Halloween themed products. I usually create a theme and a regular theme with all of my items, but one I knew I just HAD to do, was Halloween Ten Frames! So simple yet so cute and effective.

SO if you're planning this years Halloween activities, or next years even, or looking to get a good price on a simple yet effective resource, then check out these sets. If you have a particular image you would like me to use, also let me know and I'll personlize the set just for you. :)
