Math Classroom organisation & decoration

As I said in my last post, I went into school on the Sunday before school started back.
Now this cupboard looked terrible with NOTHING in it but textbooks.

One teacher has the top shelf (because she only wants textbooks), so I took over the rest.

I have my year 9 textbooks (over 2 classes), then coloured paper, pencils, pens (50 pens for $2.60 Faber Castle too!), Math centre activities, rulers, reward container and reward certificates! I couldn't ask for a better space now!

Last year I had a problem with leaving pens/ pencils and other equipment out for other student access in a Math Centre set-up because other teachers didn't actively supervise and I ended up with NO rulers, NO pens and NO equipment, so this is padlocked and open every lesson I'm in there! :)
We also moved it more into the corner so there was more open space around the teacher desk! :) I put up my puff decorations (the pastels at the front and the bright ones at the back). I will dedicated a single blog post to creating these VERY soon! :)

On the trolley I have saved the old Year 8 textbooks that were going to be binned because of ACARA (Still VERY useful!!!!). I also found some of my posters from when I had year 6 and added them to the room to bring the class together as one even more.
You should have seen how bland and naked the back of this room looked before I took over! I've added my Math Word Wall - 43 Other words for addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and equals which I colour coordinated for students easy comparison.

I also completed a fun reflection and goal setting task with my juniors which they LOVED! Some lovely pictures to come tomorrow night! :)

HUGE Classroom Labels Pack 20% off Back2School

It was a MUCH more relaxing start to the year because I did all the hard-yards last year with preparing MOST of my word-walls, labels, headings and Math displays for my classroom! :)

Storing them neatly was my biggest problem but I've since found a SOLUTION! Grouping word walls/ spelling words/ months/ conversions into envelopes with a description on the front cover, and standing them upright in a shoe box fits just perfectly! :)

I decided to put together all of my word-wall labels along with a WHHOOOLLLLEEEE lot of other useful classroom labels to be used!

20% off for a short time too! :)

Because the thumbnails are so small, this 143 page document contains:
-   Months of the Year (Single Word)
-   Months of the Year (Single Word with image)
-   Days of the Week-   Ordinal Numbers (Words First to Thirty-first)
-   Ordinal Numbers (Numbers 1st to 31st in rectangles and circles)
-   Alphabet (Upper & Lower Case in circle, rectangle and square)
-   Alphabet (Upper Case in circle, rectangle and square)
-   Group Name Cards (Group 1-8)
-   Table Name Cards (Table 1-8)

MIA & a NEW Item on Scientific Notation!

My goodness.... After finishing school 5 days ago and all the busy work around reporting and the last two weeks or school, I've neglected my blog! I'm so sorry!

I thought I would do a small post on an item I created recently on Scientific Notation!

Nothing has ever been fun abut learning scientific notation, expanded form or the basic numeral, so I thought it would be a great idea to create a resource for this!
As usual, I've included a theme specific word wall with blanks, three help cards with different examples, three different sets of domino cards and three different, fun & engaging board games with cards!

We received our timetables for next year and (so far) I am teaching Year 8, 2 x Year 9s, 11 PVM and 12 PVM!!

I would much prefer to only teach year 8 or year 8 and 9, but our school puts non-math qualified teachers on year 8 because its 'easier' to teach than year 11 or 12 PVM! :( This makes me so sad for those children.

Earlier in the year I put in a transfer to move to a high school that is accepting year 7's (our school is not) and may find out up to Day 8 if I do or don't have a transfer, so created this (and future) resources for that purpose!
Talk about nervous... Working 8 days at my school and potentially finding out that I may not be there for day 9! Needless to say, I've cleaned out my room, packed everything in boxes, and if I don't get a transfer, it'll be easy enough to unpack =\
Back to creating my Mean, Median, Mode & Range resource! :)

NEW Probability Unit

I've finally finished Uni (Master of Education half complete!!!) for this semester and have had some time last night to complete my Probability Unit! It's 20% off for a little while too! :)
The unit has 20 probability word walls to display around your room with the 7 activities being very engaging, colourful and multilevel  for students. They can be laminated and used as Math Centres or photocopied in grayscale and used as worksheets!
Level 1 and 2 students write as ___ out of ___ and level 3 students write as a fraction and simplify where possible.
Your little ones will be  ready to roll! Easy to read instructions with examples and answers included for all!
I cannot wait to spend more time on my resources now I will have the time! I cannot believe it's week 5 this week already! My year 12's are finished at the end of week 6! Time is flying...

My FIRST Halloween & NEW Probability Unit

We don't really celebrate Halloween in Australia and consequently I've never dressed up in Halloween costume!

The closest I've come to Halloween is our Annual Kiters Sports Day and as you can see from the pictures in 2010 it was Angels & Devils themed!

It will be REALLY EASY to dress Scott & Max up as Devils! Me on the other hand... I have a witches hat... and that's it =\  We're also going to carve a pumpkin too! ANOTHER FIRST!

I'd love some suggestions as to what to wear for Halloween?
A sneak peak of the Probability Unit!

I've also been working on a probability unit with 20 Probability Word Walls and so far with 7 separate math centres over three levels!

I'm still working on Instructions, more levels and answers. I'm excited to complete this unit and use it next year (who knows what year level I'll have then!).

What else would you like to see in your probability units?

Seal KISS & 5 days left...

Talk about exhausted! There are 5 school days left of this term and after completing 124 different report cards for Maths this weekend, Max's (step-son) swimming club night, Saturday squad & Little Athletics, I've finished it off with my husband and Max at Underwater World. I even managed a seal kiss - It was amazing. The 1.5 hour drive each way was completely worth it :)

My Seal Kiss

I've blogged before about how I've organised my Math Center and I must say it has been working extremely well. Both my year 8 classes have an A3 laminated page with all the current Math Center activities listed at the top of the columns. My activities that contain two or more levels, I have split then into different activity levels as you can see on my chart.

Even my year 8's (12-14 year olds) love coming to show me their working out, solutions and their honesty when they mark their work and have made an error in their calculations. I have had some time to take a photo and the below picture shows my year 8's beginning to play my Pirate Percentage & Fraction Dominoes game.

Pirate Percentage & Fraction Dominoes
It's so great to see them working together to solve Mathematics problems and having Mathematical arguments as to who is right and who is wrong, then calling me over to "end" it!

I always wonder what other type of theme parks like UnderwaterWorld there are around the world!? Is that what they are called still - a theme park even if it's animals!?

Integers - Word Wall Freebie

I've decided to show you all a photo of one of my first word wall I used at the beginning of this year for my Year 8 Unit on Integers! I found that some of my students really struggled to understand adding and subtracting on a number line, and because this classroom is shared with other teachers I wasn't able to laminate a number line on the desk like I would have done, so I created a HUGE number line for their pin board. The border of this pin board is made from laminated off-cuts! :) Pretty and useful.

I printed and laminated key Mathematics words around the Integers topic and as you can see, below the images were either synonyms or students definitions of the word. I have done this for every topic since and have found it helps students understanding and saves them from asking questions that they can answer themself.

I have uploaded a much prettier version of these word wall words to TpT as a Freebie for you all!

I hope you have a wonderful day ahead of you! Here's a photo of some cutting up of laminating I have to do!

Have a wonderful day! :)
