FREE Area Dominoes - Review in my Classroom

Year 9s are currently working on area, area of composite shapes, volume and capacity.

Since one of my year 9 classes require more support and engaging activities, I decided to use my FREEBIE Area of Square, Rectangle and Triangle Dominoes to review how to calculate the area of basic shapes that should have been covered in year 6 (covered, just forgotten)!

I differentiated this activity by making students show their calculations/ working out! :)

They LOVED working through this activity where they could work in a small group, share the 'working out' responsibility and collaborate to solve the problem!

It is always amazing to hear so much math-related discussion/ arguments happening in class!

In Australia, we're all getting ready to go back to school in the next two weeks! TWO WEEKS!

WHERE did those HOLIDAYS go!?

They allllwayyysss FLLLLYYYYYYYYYY by, but I guess that means we've enjoyed the holidays to make them fly! :)

Our school voted on the student free days to be Wednesday, Thursday & Friday from 9am-4pm, so we're back in 11 days!

The kids don't come back until Tuesday 29th January because Monday is Australia Day's public holiday in lieu of because the public holiday is on the Saturday!

Between now and then we have a roof of a Gazebo to build, finish renovating downstairs, make a new FREEBIE and prepare for the new school year!

Any FREEBIE ideas!? :) 

MIA & a NEW Item on Scientific Notation!

My goodness.... After finishing school 5 days ago and all the busy work around reporting and the last two weeks or school, I've neglected my blog! I'm so sorry!

I thought I would do a small post on an item I created recently on Scientific Notation!

Nothing has ever been fun abut learning scientific notation, expanded form or the basic numeral, so I thought it would be a great idea to create a resource for this!
As usual, I've included a theme specific word wall with blanks, three help cards with different examples, three different sets of domino cards and three different, fun & engaging board games with cards!

We received our timetables for next year and (so far) I am teaching Year 8, 2 x Year 9s, 11 PVM and 12 PVM!!

I would much prefer to only teach year 8 or year 8 and 9, but our school puts non-math qualified teachers on year 8 because its 'easier' to teach than year 11 or 12 PVM! :( This makes me so sad for those children.

Earlier in the year I put in a transfer to move to a high school that is accepting year 7's (our school is not) and may find out up to Day 8 if I do or don't have a transfer, so created this (and future) resources for that purpose! 

Talk about nervous... Working 8 days at my school and potentially finding out that I may not be there for day 9! Needless to say, I've cleaned out my room, packed everything in boxes, and if I don't get a transfer, it'll be easy enough to unpack =\

FREEBIE Fraction Tri Ominos

I admit it.... Even though I don't want to.... Fraction Tri Ominos was my husbands idea! This is what happens when we're both teachers and we discuss TpT!

I must say I really loved making them as a FREEBIE to you all the say thank you for your continual support and encouragement.

If they are popular and well liked, I will consider making more including Rounding Tri Ominos! How exciting and confusing to plan and make to begin with! A VERRRYYY large piece of paper was needed!

4 NEW Multiplication Games & Flower Power FONT!

Oh my goodness! I was so excited to see Mel's - Graphics from the Pond FREE FlowerPower Font this morning that I sat down and began planning an item to upload! I've been looking for a very perky happy colour theme font to use and was very happy to know I could also colour them as I wanted which really brightened up my Multiplication board game!

I created 4 Multiplication games that a fun and engaging way for your little ones to practise their multiplication skills or 0, 1, 2, 4 and 8 times tables! Just print, laminate and add a spinner and you're ready to roll! Easy to read instructions and answer keys provided! 20% off for the first few days too!

FREE Coordinate Math Center Game

This FREE math center game has 12 different task cards over 4 levels and full solutions provided for each card. Students need to identify that the points on a Cartesian plane are represented by what is called an ordered pair or coordinates as ( X value, Y value ). The 4 levels range from 1 quadrant up to using all four quadrants. 

I cannot wait to print this set and use it with my year 8 and 9s who need a simple yet engaging way to practise identifying coordinates/ ordered pairs. We often only have "time" to focus on the set curriculum and this gives me the opportunity to include a review of coordinate mapping in my math rotations!

This freebie is the first of a Coordinate & Mapping Skills set I am working on which covers identifying points, plotting points, plotting shapes/ objects and transformations. I hope you find it as useful as I will! :)

I Have, Who Has Area Games

I am very excited to announce the creation of my very first I have, Who Has Game! Area (along with so many other concepts) is a vital concept which underpins so much in middle and upper school Mathematics that I always focus on games that test their ability, understanding and accuracy (time as well)!

I cannot wait to add this to my Math Center because I know the different levels will enable my very low level year 8s to have success and confidence to move on and look at the other levels! :)

Seal KISS & 5 days left...

Talk about exhausted! There are 5 school days left of this term and after completing 124 different report cards for Maths this weekend, Max's (step-son) swimming club night, Saturday squad & Little Athletics, I've finished it off with my husband and Max at Underwater World. I even managed a seal kiss - It was amazing. The 1.5 hour drive each way was completely worth it :)

I've blogged before about how I've organised my Math Center and I must say it has been working extremely well. Both my year 8 classes have an A3 laminated page with all the current Math Center activities listed at the top of the columns. My activities that contain two or more levels, I have split then into different activity levels as you can see on my chart.

Even my year 8's (12-14 year olds) love coming to show me their working out, solutions and their honesty when they mark their work and have made an error in their calculations. I have had some time to take a photo and the below picture shows my year 8's beginning to play my Pirate Percentage & Fraction Dominoes game.

It's so great to see them working together to solve Mathematics problems and having Mathematical arguments as to who is right and who is wrong, then calling me over to "end" it!



I always wonder what other type of theme parks like UnderwaterWorld there are around the world!? Is that what they are called still - a theme park even if it's animals!?
